SEMINARS

Seminar by S. L. Kuznetsov and S. O. Speranski "Logical and algebraic methods in linguistics"
February 15–May 10, 2023, Steklov Mathematical Institute, Room 313 (8 Gubkina) + online

We kindly ask all participants, including remote ones and those
watching recorded videos, to register at https://forms.gle/csgRT7heu6ByqHGDA.

Mathematical methods play an extremely important role in modern linguistics. Basically, they are divided into two large groups: logical-algebraic methods, which are used to formalize and study various aspects of language, and statistical methods, which are used to analyze large amounts of language data. This seminar is devoted to the methods of the first group.

Applications of logic and algebra in linguistics are very diverse. They may be related to the study of the syntactic structure of natural language, its semantics, the discourse structure of texts, etc. Of course, the corresponding methods are also very diverse: they use classical model-theoretic semantics, possible worlds semantics, substructural logics, lambda calculus, elements of type theory (including dependent types) and category theory, and so on.
