Russian Mathematical Community in Exile (the first half of the 20th century): People and Fates

Russian scientific diaspora has made a significant contribution and impact on the development of the world's scientific and philosophical thought of the 20th century, many national scientific communities and civil society of the recipient countries. However, the history, the features of forming and applying of the emigre disciplinary communities, and mathematical as such, are still not sufficiently studied. The Russian monographic and reference literature of recent years on the history of the Russian mathematical community is still focusing on the activities and practices of the individual scholars. Meanwhile it's impossible to understand this phenomenon in its historical statics and dynamics and its extent without a detailed prosopographic research of ethnic, confessional, geographical, age, and disciplinary composition of the Russian scientific community. Based on the materials collected in the framework of the research program of the Alexandr Solzhenitsyn Russia Abroad House the paper examines the geography, prosopography and sociology of the Russian mathematical community abroad in general, with a focus on the variability of the fate of individual mathematicians: I.А. Lappo-Danilevsky (Germany), A.D. Bilimovich (Yugoslavia), S.N. Shishpanov (Paraguay) and others.
