Abstract:
The lecture is dedicated to the mathematicians who lived on the Petersburg side in the 18th – 20th centuries, until 1914.In the 18th century, the Petersburg side was a forest. In the summer, the families of Euler, Fuss, Bernoulli rented houses here in peasant villages. The memory of the creative and dramatic episodes of their lives has been preserved. We will tell about the history of the Petersburg side, about the life of scientists, about the main points of attraction: higher educational institutions, the houses of A.N. Krylov, V.A. Steklov, N.M. Gunther and P. Ehrenfest. V.A. Steklov's activity contributed to the emergence of the Leningrad school of mathematical physics. P. Ehrenfest's home seminars highlighted the area of mutual interest of mathematicians and physicists, which contributed to the emergence of the Leningrad Physics and Mathematics Society, registered on the Petersburg side. Some destinies and events will be told for the first time.
