Mikhail Zakharovich Solomyak (1931-2016) a Leningrad mathematician, an outstanding researcher in Functional Analysis and Mathematical Physics

G. V. Rozenblum

Abstract: We will talk about the eminent Leningrad and Israeli mathematician M.Z.Solomyak belonging to the generation of mathematicians who has made an extraordinary progress in various topics of analysis and mathematical physics on the base of using ideas, methods and results of functional analysis. Most known are the results of M.Z. Solomyak, obtained jointly with M.Sh. Birman in a unique collaboration spanning over 40 years. Especially outstanding are their achievements in the spectral theory of integral and differential operators of mathematical physics, in obtaining estimates and asymptotics of eigenvalues, the topic uniting many fields of analysis. We will also talk about the life path of Mikhail Zakharovich against the background of repeatedly changing conditions in our country.
