The first Math Olympiads in Russia/USSR. Part II

D. V. Fomin

Abstract: In continuation of the previous lecture on the very first Soviet math olympiad held in Leningrad in 1934, this second part of the investigation tells about the second Leningrad Math Olympiad of 1935 with some new information about the format and the participants, including numerous articles from the contemporary newspapers and the contestants’ recollections. In addition, we provide some interesting information on the first published problem book intended for the newly created system of Leningrad mathematical circles. Finally, we briefly describe the very first city-level comprehensive mathematical competition for high-schoolers ever held in Russia (and quite possibly, in the world!) – that event was organized “only” 180 years ago in imperial Russia’s capital of… you guessed it… St.Petersburg.
