Do the primes play dice?

Kevin Ford

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Abstract: The sequence of prime numbers have fascinated mathematicians since antiquity, largely due to the apparent irregularity in their distribution. However, regularities and patterns appear if the primes are viewed statistically. We will discuss how ideas from probability theory can be used to study prime numbers, with an emphasis on gaps between consecutive prime numbers. In particular, we will discuss recent breakthroughs concerning small and large gaps between prime numbers.
