Abstract:
Philip Prokofievich Otradnykh (1900-1955) was an associate professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Leningrad University and the author and compiler of a course on the history of mathematics. He taught this course from 1946 to 1953. At the time the course was criticized by students and experts. Although it was not perfect, and despite the passage of time since its creation, it is important to remember the work of this author.
The report provides an overview of the main events in the life of F.P. Otradnykh and describes his lectures, which were among the first attempts to introduce the history of mathematics as a significant component of university mathematics education. F.P. Otradnykh was among the first to undertake an in-depth analysis of historical and mathematical literature at the time, a list of which remains relevant and valuable for modern teachers. Due his work on the course, Otradnykh authored several works on the history of mathematics that can also serve as a valuable resource for teachers and students of mathematics today.
