‘Orthogonal effects’ in deformable solid mechanics

D. V. Georgievskii

Abstract: Some effects of the stress-strain state, such as vibration creep, creep acceleration and recoiling, observed and studied in experimental mechanics of deformable solids, are proposed to be modelled on the basis of determining relations realised in tensor nonlinear viscoelastic models of the Maxwell type. The apparatus of nonlinear isotropic tensor functions depending on two symmetric tensor arguments is involved. Examples of a complex stress state in a tubular specimen are given, when there is a significant disproportionate growth in time of the axial strain component under the combined action of constant axial and oscillatory shear loads as compared to the case of the action of axial load alone. The concepts of generalised and combined retching under conditions of complex stress state are introduced.
