Abstract:
We consider the limit of string theory where the tension parameter tends to zero, which corresponds to the high-energy regime. In this limit, all physical states become massless, and the theory is expected to be described by the Vasiliev higher-spin model. This theory is characterized by extended symmetries that are fundamentally different from the Virasoro algebra that underlies classical string dynamics. We will consider the relationship between the symmetries of the two theories, and discuss the problems encountered when considering the spectrum of such a theory.
