Young mathematician Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrentyev

N. V. Shilov

Abstract: Abstract: Is it possible to combine teaching a mathematical discipline (for example, ordinary differential equations) and elements of the history of mathematics (not limiting the subject to a specific mathematical discipline) in a regular university course? In the talk I would like to present an example of such a combination, where Picard's theorem on the existence and uniqueness of a (local) solution of an ordinary differential equation is immediately followed by a expository review of Mikhail Lavrentiev's first scientific papers and a “prehistory” of physics and mathematics boarding schools. The motivation for this choice/combination is the centenary of the publication of these papers and the desire to introduce students to the beginnings of the founder of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok and its physics and mathematics boarding school.
