Applications of matroid theory in statics — a survey

Rigidity of bar-and-joint frameworks in civil engineering poses a lot of interesting combinatorial problems. We survey some former results, partly referring to generic frameworks, partly to very symmetric ones, and present some more recent generalizations to tensegrity frameworks where cables and struts are also permitted. Our main tool is graph theory but some problems require matroids as well.
