On phase transitions in open systems far from thermal equilibrium

In these lectures it is outlined some rigorous results, obtained in collaboration with E. H. Lieb [1], concerning a class of non-trivial quantum mechanical many-body systems with irreversible behaviour away from thermal equilibrium.
